The Boots on the Ground.

It’s a known fact that the military is crazy man, but lordy lord someone’s got to do it.

A soldier isn’t title anyone can be hired to do because a soldier serves his country first and his life is left behind….he has subordinated it to the general interest because he puts the welfare of the military and nation before his own. There’s strength in a soldier that beats in his heart always.

Many people know that there’s honor in soldiers….. you can hear it when they talk. I know there’s courage in soldiers…. I can see it in their eyes. There’s discipline in soldiers….you can see it when they walk….and even when they stand.

What do you think of the military when you see the men in uniform?.

Your guess is as good as mine. Some see it as, “a mad man’s job”. They believe the military personnel is a mix between “Crazy and Semi – Normal” and will do everything to avoid any altercation with them in the belief that the consequences may be dire but the truth is, they treat people as they should be treated.

In reality, your views as to what the military man is may differ in relation to what part of the world you are in. Often times, in some parts of the world, you don’t get to see such heavy military presence anywhere you turn. They are often in their military bases, which is self sustaining. It’s usually a world of its own compared to the African setting. The challenges that have more or less overwhelmed our civil security agencies in Africa has led to the introduction of the military in aid to civil authority to maintain law and order.

Who Really is a Soldier?

A soldier is one who fights as part of an army. He is that man/woman that knows the risk he/she takes, yet got enlisted!….How brave!. Soldiers face dangers and risk personal safety. War is dangerous…. soldiers know this. That spirit of a soldier is not what can be bought….Hell no, fighting spirit can never be bought in the market!.

It takes a special kind of person and more than just guts to volunteer to serve, knowing it’s a one way ticket towards some of the ugliest fights he may run into. Hence, “the nation and military ain’t doin’ no soldier no favour”, rather the soldiers are doing the nation a huge favour by serving. Thank the soldiers you know today, for their service.

Do you know what makes these soldiers stand out from the mercenary?

They know the true meaning of HONOR, COURAGE, LOYALTY, COMMITMENT, RESPECT, DUTY, INTEGRITY and SELFLESS SERVICE.

A true soldier ( with ) discipline is what i call STRONG, FEARLESS and UNSELFISH ( a soldier always sacrifices what comes first in a civilian’s mind ). He is LOYAL, FOCUSED and RESOURCEFUL, a PEACEKEEPER and a HERO.

A soldier is always a soldier in everything he does…whether he’s on the job or off, even while he sleeps.

But then, ” What could make a soldier not live up to the values he has learnt in details during training?”.

It’s well known that there’s loyalty in soldiers that they won’t compromise but nowadays, cases abound whereby soldiers were identified with criminal elements.

Why?

What could make a Nigerian soldier deviate from his work ethics?”

People would say greed...YES, that’s right ( in some cases though) but i don’t need a philosopher to tell me the real reason. It’s just the “FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN”,( although that doesn’t justify a CRIME, or any act of misconduct in or out of uniform!). That’s why it would be a great thing if certain benefits are given to the soldier and his family. What obtains in other developed climes and Armed Forces can be studied and applied here too.

I have also seen comments and reports where people made references to soldiers stationed on the road who collect money from commuters and drivers.

Boy!…it’s bound to happen!. I mean, what do you expect a man on the road who risks his life for others to live in peace, who has mouths to feed and bills to pay to do with as little as he earns. When you look at it critically, you will find out i’m right but that doesn’t make it right anyway.  Hence, there’s need to enhance their allowances and take home pay.

The typical soldier i know, always thinks of what allowances or entitlements are due to him. He prefers to die with it in his pocket in situations whereby he’s stationed where there are no banks hence, he doesn’t like compulsory savings.

I sincerely wish and hope that as investigations in recent cases are going on to fish out the criminals within the system, that panels should be set up to determine the root cause of these problems and the possible solutions which should be effectively implemented.

If you are a soldier reading this, I am saying this to you…..KEEP CALM, SOLDIER ON and thank you for your SERVICE!!!.

God bless you real good!.
