Does Your Conduct Portray the Tenets of Your Religion?

The Big Question???

Treasure James

Thomas Hobbes a founding father of political philosophy, argued that man naturally is born wicked and must be civilized. He stated that human beings live in a “state of nature” and famously argued that our lives would be “nasty, brutish and short“.

With this in mind, what can we say make some people kind-hearted, compared to some who delight in seeing people in pain and make every effort to frustrate others?

Such people always try to put a cog in the wheel of people’s progress even without the people having any bad blood or relationship with them.

Society as we know it has over time built up values. This code of conduct makes people differentiate between right or wrong. Apart from education, both at the formal and informal level, religion plays a vital role too.

Religion in its varied nature and form seeks to always portray itself as better and above others. When worshipers are at their places of worship, they always put on a “holier than thou” attitude. Shouting and screaming to the high heavens. Calling on God’s name to answer their prayers.

At the end of such sessions, do our conduct portray the tenets of our religion?

Most religions, generally promote modesty, patience, goodness, truthfulness, faithfulness, love, mildness, self-control, peace, and above all, a heart willing to assist and do good for the sake of humanity (charity).

You may wonder why I’m talking about this?

This issue is of great concern to me because my relationship with different people both in and out of their place of work, has made me wonder if we’re losing our minds or religion losing its value?

A clear case in point is people who hide old retirees’ files and those who use administrative bottlenecks to frustrate people or anything that passes their table.

I know of a certain religious woman that even leads her office fellowship but unfortunately, when she died, old retirees’ files, documents, and her personal effects were seen hidden right under the rug where her table was. To think those men and women have been frustrated for years searching for their documents is just something I can’t imagine. Do you think her religion spoke through her?

Public office, the way I see it, is a huge responsibility on one’s shoulder especially if you’re charged with the responsibility of providing service. If you can’t help, don’t add to people’s suffering or sorrow.

Let me also say that, there’s a huge responsibility that lies on the shoulders of supervisors charged with carrying out oversight functions. It’s their duty to ensure that there’s compliance at all times and also notify the management when there’s a need for refresher training.

I can also recall a personal experience I passed through when I went to my former school to collect my certificate. I started the collection process until I realized they were making me turn in circles while intentionally, removing documents that had been in my file. Apart from the fact that I was asked personal questions, at every point in the process, the people in charge were unnecessarily hostile with no just cause. They for requested documents that are even nonexistent all in a bid to frustrate me into a state of submission either to satisfy their sadistic desire at seeing people suffer or to extort money from me.

Those guys tried adding me to the group of people I met there who they had frustrated to the point that they lost all hope and just stood looking tired and frustrated wondering where help would come from. It was after I engaged them headlong that I was able to collect my certificate. This made me wonder why people would wish for a job and when it comes, they use that office to hurt others?

The irony of it all, at every point in time, the most wicked among the staff are always calling God’s name. Those are the types you’ll always see with funny-looking attires and makeup-free faces.

I was even forced to ask some of them if the way they behave portrays the tenets of their religion?  A person’s conduct while carrying out a job justly without venting personal frustrations is enough to make whoever the service is being rendered smile. In a way, this might change the perception about the people practicing such a person’s religion.

The essence of this write-up is to create an awareness that our religion or whatever we practice is supposed to speak through us.

As I believe, man is not naturally wicked except he chooses to be. We all have a conscience that will let us know if what we are doing is right or wrong!

I’ll leave you here today with this important question…..Does your religion speak through you???

Please, take one minute to think about it.
